Single \Sin"gle\, a. [L. singulus, a dim. from the root in simplex simple; cf. OE. & OF. sengle, fr. L. singulus. See {Simple}, and cf. {Singular}.] 1. One only, as distinguished from more than one; consisting of one alone; individual; separate; as, a single star. Beer \Beer\, n. [OE. beor, ber, AS. be['o]r; akin to Fries. biar, Icel. bj?rr, OHG. bior, D. & G. bier, and possibly E. brew. [root]93, See {Brew}.] 1. A fermented liquor made from any malted grain, but commonly from barley malt, with hops or some other substance to impart a bitter flavor. Note: Beer has different names, as {small beer}, {ale}, {porter}, {brown stout}, {lager beer}, according to its strength, or other qualities. See {Ale}. 2. Beer well. (1.) A place where a well was dug by the direction of Moses, at the forty-fourth station of the Hebrews in their wanderings (Num. 21:16-18) in the wilderness of Moab. (See {WELL}.) (2.) A town in the tribe of Judah to which Jotham fled for fear of Abimelech (Judg. 9:21).
